Interrail and Eurail Pass

The Interrail and Eurail passes are two different rail tickets that allow you unlimited travel on most rail operators across 33 countries in Europe. Both passes offer similar benefits, but pricing, duration options, and terms may vary as Interrail is available exclusively for those who live within or near Europe, while Eurail is designed for non-European residents.

Whether you prefer visiting big cities or discovering mountains and beaches, these passes are ideal for travellers who want a flexible, adventurous way to experience the diverse cultures and landscapes of Europe by train!

Global Pass and One Country Pass

Based on your itinerary, travel style, and budget, you might want to choose between a Global Pass, which allows you to travel throughout the entire system, or a One Country Pass, which focuses exclusively on a single country.

All of these passes are offered as flexible tickets, meaning you can use a specified number of travel days within its period of validity, and they do not have to be consecutive. For example, with a 5 days within 1 month pass, you have five travel days that you can use within a one-month period. Only the Global Pass is also sold as a continuous pass which, as the name suggests, allows you to travel on every single day within the overall validity of your pass.

For both types of passes, you can also choose between 1st and 2nd class, except in some specific countries where the One Country Pass is only available in the latter. The pass is only valid for travel in the class indicated on the ticket, but you will find some trains that only offer 2nd class. In such cases, you can also travel with a 1st class ticket without being entitled to any refund or compensation.

How to use your Pass

The passes are issued in different formats: as a mobile ticket or a paper pass. As expected, the first option is the most commonly used, and the one I personally recommend, although both work in a similar way. You can buy an Interrail o Eurail Pass up to 11 months in advance.

  • Mobile pass: You can start using it instantly after your purchase. To do so, you will need to download the Rail Planner app, where you will be able to manage your pass and add the different journeys you find in the planner. Keep in mind that you can only load your pass on one device at a time.
  • Paper pass: It will be delivered to your address, so expect a few weeks for it to be posted. When purchasing, you will need to specify the start date of your journey. It consists of a ticket, with all the details of your pass, and a travel diary, where you must record the journey details of each train you take.

Things to be aware of

Seat reservations
For some specific trains, a seat reservation is required in addition to your pass. It’s very important to plan this in advance, as passholder places may be limited.

Home country to border
The passes do not permit travel within your country of residence. If you have a Global Pass, you are only entitled to one outbound and one inbound journey.

Night trains
When you use an overnight train, only one travel day will be required if you board before midnight and do not change trains afterwards.

No Experience? No Problem!

If you are new to train travel in Europe, the Interrail and Eurail passes may seem a bit overwhelming at first. However, they are the best way to explore the continent by rail. I’ve created a guide that breaks down everything I believe you need to know as a beginner, helping you travel with confidence and avoid common mistakes.

Buying your pass

The best way to buy an Interrail or Eurail Pass is through their official website. This ensures that the terms and conditions remain consistent. However, note that they may vary during certain promotions. Your mobile pass is delivered instantly, while paper passes take a few days to arrive at your home. However, if you buy a paper pass at a major train station, you will receive it immediately.
